I hit a million subscribers this year, travelled alone for the first time after having bad homesickness in the past, and bungee jumped. But, of all of that, there was one thing that stood out to me most.
I haven’t really spoken about this much, but early this year I wrote a song based on John Green’s The Fault In Our Stars. I filmed a music video for it at a local hospital, and made an amazing friend with the best smile i’d ever seen named Kimmy. I met her brave sister, her caring brother, and her impossibly loving and strong parents. Kimmy and I kept in very close contact over the months, and then, two days before her 15th birthday, Kimmy passed away. I’d never lost anyone before, so the whole experience was really, really new to me, and I was travelling alone at the time. A few very hard days later, I flew home to attend Kimmy’s funeral. At the funeral, during a slideshow of photos from Kimmy’s short but vibrant life, they played my song.
I was a wreck, but the thought that I made a difference, no matter how small, in Kimmy and her family’s lives, is one of the proudest i’ve ever had. The song that I had written based off of fictional characters from John Green’s incredible mind had an entirely new meaning, and now represented the most incredible person i’ve met. I’d like to thank John Green for making that experience possible for me. Rest In Peace, Kimmo.
